Special Educational Needs

Miss Phillips SEN Co-ordinator

St Josephs is committed to developing the potential of each individual, including children with Special Needs. Our policy is to integrate them into our mainstream classroom activities and our extra-curricular programme, so that they experience a broad and balance curriculum. Individual arrangements are made for pupils to reflex their needs. Most receive support within the classroom from a learning support assistant. A few will be withdrawn from some lessons and provided with individual teaching to help raise their standards of literacy and/or numeracy. The last OFSTED report stated that the quality of teaching and learning for pupils with special educational needs is very good. Pupils make very good progress both in basic skills and in confidence. Pupils will be supported by a number of interventions, either on a 1-1 basis or in a small group. The building of a childs self-esteem is integral to the schools mission statement but it is taken to ensure that personal confidence and self-belief are both maintained and developed. Children with disabilities are given equal status when being considered for admission to St. Josephs. Toilet facilities for pupils with disabilities are located in the main corridor of the building.
